What To Wear on a Cruise: 5 Day-to-Night Outfit Ideas

You usually have your suitcase within a couple of hours but on occasion may have to wait until early evening. Royal Caribbean cruises have three main dress codes that apply to the evenings onboard the cruise ship. The Windjammer buffet has a casual dress code at all times of the day.

Royal Caribbean Dress Code: A Style for Everyone

Although it’s been rebranded as “Dress to Impress,” guests are not obligated to adhere strictly to the dress code. If you don’t feel like dressing to impress, you’ll still be able to attend most of the events and meals on the ship. If you are looking for an excuse to get dressed to the nines, a cruise with formal nights is one opportunity.

To pack for casual nights onboard your Caribbean cruise, women can look to bring bright sundresses, tropical patterns and colorful outfits. I love to pack my dresses that are bright colors, like pink and yellow - these are just quintessential Caribbean cruise outfits for me. Packing for your sailing’s more formal evening depends on how long your sailing is.

Royal Caribbeans Evening Dress Codes – Formal Nights

Royal Caribbean has a few dress codes that are only for dining in select restaurants. While tank tops and sleeveless shirts are suitable for daytime or by the pool, they are not recommended for evening dining venues, including the main dining room. While some specialty restaurants maintain a smart casual or formal dress code, others might have a more relaxed atmosphere.

Please note camouflage print clothing and accessories, as well as military-style clothing, is illegal in Antigua, Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. This style of clothing is reserved only for members of the military at these destinations. Ideally, you will want to reserve it as far in advance as possible to ensure they have your size available. Tuxedo rentals are also available onboard the ship, but will be subject to availability. They carry a good stock on every ship so chances are very good they will have what most sizes. Men should also pack for cooler weather when thinking about Smart Casual Night, such as plaid button-down flannels and crewneck sweaters.

In some Caribbean islands, wearing camouflage clothing is actually illegal and you can be asked to go back to the cruise ship to change or even face a fine. Swimsuits with a cover up are just fine if you’re heading straight to a beach or a catamaran snorkeling excursion. If you’re sightseeing or taking a tour, casual clothing is perfect.

The formal night dress code includes suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses and evening gowns. Dress pants and a dress shirt are also worn by many men on a cruise. Casual attire includes jeans and collared shirts for men and sundresses or pants with blouses for women. No caps, tank tops or bathing suits are permitted in the main dining room or specialty restaurants, and footwear is always required.

Themed Dining Venues

On my most recent cruise on Symphony of the Seas, they held a “White Night.” It was up to you if you wanted to take part or not. Probably about half of the passengers on board were dressed in white for the evening. In our experience, Royal Caribbean’s dress code is not that strict. It’s more a suggestion than a hard rule, but you should follow the general spirit of the dress code to avoid issues entering the main dining room. Since dress codes vary depending on the port or venue visited, reviewing the tour description for specific guidelines is a good idea.

What to Wear at Royal Caribbean Formal Night

Dress codes on Royal Caribbean look nothing like they did a century ago, but there is some vestige of the past still part of the cruise experience today. Another vote for there being some leeway in the enforcement of the rules, but generally against wearing shorts. A majority of 776 people voted for a flat "no", shorts should not be worn to dinner in the main dining room.

On casual nights, resort-style wear is requested -- open-neck shirts and slacks are appropriate for men, while women wear casual dresses, blouses and skirts or pants. Jeans and baseball caps are not allowed in the restaurants for dinner. Royal Caribbean’s dress codes are loosely enforced, with most cruise passengers dressing less formally than this.

For comfort and convenience during shore excursions, casual, lightweight clothing is recommended. When going on beach outings, you can wear a sundress, romper, shorts, t-shirts, or swimsuit cover-up over your bathing suit. Guests can get creative with their attire, incorporating themed colors, prints, and accessories to fully immerse themselves in the celebration. Participating in themed dining nights not only enhances the overall ambiance but also creates wonderful memories of enjoying delectable cuisine in a vibrant and joyous setting.

These vibrant nights often draw the most participation from guests, each one turning the ship into a scene from a movie or a page from history. As with other aspects of the dress code on Royal Caribbean, there’s a mix of suggested guidelines and room for personal flair. These are the restaurants that offer not just a meal, but an entire experience. From global cuisines to themed dining experiences, the culinary voyage is as thrilling as the destinations you visit. Evening attire onboard the Royal Caribbean is an experience in itself. As you dine, dance, and revel under the stars, your attire plays a significant role in making each night memorable.
